Sinister 2 (2015)

When I had originally heard that there was going to be a sequel to Sinister, one of my favorite horror films, I was pretty excited to say the least. Then, early spring this year, the first official trailer was released. I suddenly felt less enthusiastic about the movie, but I still held on some hope that it could be a decent follow-up to the original, until I finally saw it tonight. I read the signs but ignored the warnings, and my punishment was an astonishingly disappointing sequel. Sinister 2 takes place some time after the events of the original film and follows Deputy So And So (that's seriously how he's credited in the film). He has become obsessed with tracking down murders and child abductions that could be linked to an ancient pagan deity named Baghuul, who coerces a child into killing their family and takes the child's soul. It leads him to a farmhouse near the site of a mass murder in a church which he expects to find empty. When he arrives at the house, So and So sees that a mother and twin sons have already moved into the house, and one of the twins is the subject of midnight show-and-tell with the ghost kids' kill tapes. From the first ten minutes, I noticed that something felt terribly wrong about this movie. Deputy So and So was nothing more than comic relief in the original film, and, outside of the big plot twist at the end, he can hardly carry more than a scene by himself, let alone an entire movie. While he is a generally likable character, Deputy So and So just isn't cut out to carry an entire film by himself. His character actually made the movie funnier than it was scary, and there was very little to be afraid of in this movie. If you've seen the trailer, and I'm not exaggerating, every single scare is spoiled in the trailer, and there aren't any surprises left for you. It seems like the filmmakers thought that showing Baghuul off as much as possible could make the sequel scarier than the original, but what made the original so terrifying is that Baghuul was just a shadow in the back of the tapes. You rarely saw him for more than just a glance, and it was scary as hell. In Sinister 2, however, you can practically count the buttons on his black overcoat because he's shown so profusely throughout the movie. Along with a ridiculously over-the-top abusive husband side plot, a weak script and bland direction, Sinister 2 is one of the biggest disappointments of the year for horror.

I didn't think it was that terrible. It had decent story and build up. My problem though was that the male lead reminded me of Anthony Perkins' Norman Bates so I kinda went in with that feeling of familiarity and was really hoping he'd make it out ok. But I can't argue that he made the film more humorous than scary.

My only real problem was the ending really. Making the kid the killer could of worked, but the execution was dumb as fuck. How did the kid manage to move not only his brother but his mother and full grown violent father to crucifixes and drag them up in the middle of a cornfield... shouldn't he have been easily over powered?

Which got only worse when the three left alive ran from the little prick. Ooo he's got a sickle our days are so numbered! He's like 4ft tall just punt the little bastard! Even beating him with a cornstalk should have incapacitated him enough to take away the sickle and ground his bratty ass.

And the hotel last attempt for a jump scare was just pathetic. Didn't even make sense...

I was so disappointed with this sequel, but I went in with low expectations from what I viewed in the trailers.
When I first saw Sinister back in 2012 I knew very little about it except it appeared as a ghost story starring Ethan Hawke. I was blown away by the 8mm films in the movie and thought the first half of the movie was terrifying and intense. It all started going downhill for me after that seen where Bughuul shows up on the computer screen and then there was the ghost children and it all started to get a little hokey. I felt the ending was strong but it should have ended with the Oswalt's death and no ghost kids running around and being lame. I still left the movie scared of this entity I knew very little about and I couldn't get those 8mm films outta my mind.
Well Sinister 2 falls flat on everything that made Sinister so unnerving. The whole movie is those ghost kids running around and being lame and Bughuul is basically hanging out in every scene waiting for someone to notice him. There was no surprise with the 8mm films and the way they were shown in the movie was irritating. They kept zooming in and out of them so you could watch the kids watching them, which made them less effective. The "Fishing Trip" film could have been a great scare but I barely could see what was happening. We never even got to see the Dentist film but I suppose it doesn't matter.
I was really sad to see a sequel that could have been so much better turned into this predictable mess of a movie. I really always hoped they would do a prequel instead and maybe tie it into the first movie.
Well I guess if your scared of pale children and have to constantly see the villain then this would be a good sequel. To me it was somewhat entertaining but I couldn't believe they strayed away from what made the first film so great.

^ Reminded me of something my Aunt and I thought after viewing Sinister 2. We could've sworn they had different writers or something. After IMDBing them I found they had the writers were the same. Surely that couldn't be it then... However while one of the writers (Scott Derrickson) directed the first one he did NOT direct the second. Could that have been where it went wrong?

I walked out right before the hotel scare at the end because I knew EXACTLY what was going to happen, then I hear the big booming jump scare noise as I'm walking out. Something else I noticed about this movie is it had the loudest jump scares in any horror movie I've seen in theatres. They cranked up the speakers to 11. Not even Insidious: Chapter 3 was that loud.

I hate the loud noises for jump scares. They rely more on the sound to frighten you than the actual scare. I confess I did jump a few times, but I'm sensitive to sound so it was more in reaction to that than fear. After I realize a scare happened I just roll my eyes.

Great... I was really looking forward to this, especially seeing "Deputy So-and-so" take the lead. He amused me in the first. But from what I'm hearing here, it sounds like I should avoid it. And yet, I just can't. I'm gonna wind up having to see it, and I know I'm gonna regret it now. :(

Everyone has different opinions. You may like it despite popular views. At least rent it before relying on reviews. 8)

Loved this sequel. The audience screamed with terror at every turn. A couple of people got up and left for a good ten minutes they were so frightened.
