Green Lantern has found his leading lady and she’s a Gossip Girl.
Blake Lively will play Carol Ferris, the daughter of aerospace mogul Carl Ferris. She runs her father’s company and winds up hiring Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) as a test pilot and, of course, falls for him. In the comics their relationship hits a wall when she becomes the #1 at the company and an alien race dubs her the new Star Sapphire. Back in December we told you about the final five for the role, which included Lively as well as Eva Green, Keri Russell, Diane Kruger and Jennifer Garner. THR mentions that even the filmmakers were aware of the fact that Lively was a little young for the role, but they were so overwhelmed by her performance in The Town that they had to go for her. Between Gossip Girl, Accepted and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies, Lively didn’t have the range to expand herself beyond playing a mindless pretty blond girl. That all changed after The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. Not that the role of Carol Ferris is expected to require much range, but at least we know she’s capable of expanding beyond her norm. Next on director Martin Campbell’s casting list? The villainous genius Dr. Hector Hammond and the evil alien Sinestro. Shooting is scheduled to kick of in March in Louisiana putting the film on track for a June 17th, 2011 release.

...and after that horrendous news, here's some awesomeness to make up for it:

With the reports earlier this week that Peter Saarsgard is in talks to play villain Hector Hammond in Martin Campbell's Green Lantern, there's been a certain amount of speculation about whether Lantern uber-villain Sinestro will play a role. Yes, is the answer, and the word on the street is that Warners are only interested in one actor for the role:
it's Rorschach himself, Jackie Earle Haley. It's a rumour that's been floating around for a while, and Haley himself denied all knowledge last year. But Hitfix have been "making some phonecalls" and have learned that, following Watchmen and A Nightmare on Elm Street, Haley is currently seriously in favour at WB. Sinestro was certainly featured in last year's casting call, and as the character starts out as a mentor for Hal Jordan, attaining villainhood later on, it's reasonable to assume that his might be a supporting role in part one, setting up bigger things in hoped-for sequels. Time will tell, and if Haley is more in the loop than he was last autumn, and preparing to polish his yellow ring, he's revealing nothing so far. Green Lantern does, however, definitely star Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, and goes before the cameras soonish, for a summer 2011 release.

Casting news on Martin Campbell’s The Green Lantern continues to crystallize. While we had heard a rumor awhile back that Jackie Earle Haley might be in talks to play Green Lantern’s arch-nemesis, Sinestro, it now looks as though that isn’t, nor was it ever, the case.
MTV recently caught up with Campbell while during a junket for his upcoming thriller, Edge of Darkness, and popped the question to Campbell about Sinestro. According to Campbell: No, that’s completely wrong…In fact, we’re in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro…He’s not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro. If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he’s very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life. Makes sense. Sinestro is an intellectual first and foremost, and his corruption comes about because he is so determined to protect his own people. He becomes obsessed with power, control, and punishment. In other words, he's the kind of villain Strong excels at playing -- men whose brains equal or exceed their physical capabilities. Campbell also provided details about which other characters will be in the film: Well, Kilowog (a loveable bulldoggy alien) will be in it…Tomar-Re (a loveable bird-like alien) is in it. Sinestro is in it. Abin Sur is in it. All the origin people. Carol [Ferris], of course, who will be played by Blake Lively. All the main characters are there, and it’s a complex story. The origin story of Green Lantern is complex, probably one of the most complex, which makes it a challenge to get it right. Seems like a pretty ambitious cast of characters to fit into one film. Recent origin stories have been able convincingly execute the dynamics of an ensemble cast of comic boook characters, but never without making at least one or two of them rather one-note. We’ll see how Campbell handles the juggling act. What is undeniable is that Strong’s career deservedly continues to flourish. The man is undoubtedly watchable, and he truly revels in the evil/sliminess of his characters. This film adds another potential franchise to Strong’s resume; he was in Sherlock Holmes this winter and will next be seen in Kick-Ass in March, with Pixar’s John Carter of Mars up next on his production schedule. All things considered (and Blake Lively's youth aside), Lantern is shaping up to have one heck of a cast, particularly on its darker side.

I'm not sure but is Ryan Reynolds the only actor who got the chance to play more than one comic book character on screen? Hannibal King, then Deadpool and now Green Lantern!?! I think this makes him bit overrated...there are lots of better actors to play GL, anyways it's just my personal opinion.

Agreed.
While he surprised me in Smokin' Aces, there's far better people more suited to the role.

Official teaser poster. The credits looks curiously alike to Superman Returns.
