Fans of the Predator franchise are in for a "very pleasant surprise" according to Nimrod Antal - who is directing the new instalment.
He's been speaking about various aspects of the project to Coming Soon, with the counter-intuitive casting of Oscar-winning thesp Adrien Brody as a grizzled mercenary one of the topics of conversation. "I think when we cast Adrien, there were a lot of people going; 'What?' But at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that. So we decided early on to go in a very different direction as far as the casting process, but it turned out fantastic. "He plays a mercenary in the film and if you look at the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan today, they're not 'yolked-out' Schwarzenegger-looking guys. They're all very wiry and thin guys, and I think it's going to play well." Speaking of Arnie, will the 'Austrian Oak' have a cameo? Antal's answer sounded a lot like a 'yes': "Time will tell. We'll see, but we are trying to stay with the original as far as the monster and the atmosphere and the tone of the film, but we are trying to do something new and contemporary and feels fresh." The director also confirmed that the movie would be R-rated when it's released in summer 2010.

Laurence Fishburne has joined the cast of Nimrod Antal's Predators.
After visiting the set of the new, Robert Rodriguez-produced take on the be-dreadlocked alien hunters, the lads at Shock 'Till You Drop have learned that Morpheus himself is joining the cast to play a tough guy named Roland. It's perhaps less of a shock given that Fishburne and Antal just worked together on Armored, and that Larry is the sort of bloke you'd want around if you were fighting the warrior race. He'll star alongside the likes of Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Alice Braga and The Shield's Walton Goggins. We love the little plot description at the end of the story: "They play a disparate group of people who land on the Predator home planet only to discover 'unspeakable horrors.'"

The film and media portion of South by Southwest (SXSW) kicks off in Austin next week, and two films have just been added to the lineup. Austin’s own Robert Rodriguez will screen footage from Predators, and Gela Babluani’s 13, a remake of his own 13 Tzameti, will screen as part of the festival’s SX Fantastic midnight program.
Predators isn’t screening in its entirety; Rodriguez and director Nimrod Antal will show a selection of footage then hold a Q&A session afterward. Rodriguez did this years ago, with Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and recently SXSW offered a similar sneak peek at Bruno. A show of confidence that the footage looks pretty good? Sounds very much so; if Predators didnt’ have something good happening then a sneak peek at footage being shown at the fest wouldn't be happening. Let’s hope that’s the way it goes down. “My director, Nimrod Antal, and I are excited to bring this first look at ‘Predators’ to Austin’s SXSW Film Festival, an event that’s become vital to the filmmaking scene,” said Rodrigez. “Austin is my home and I’m proud that ‘Predators’ was conceived and filmed here.” The film stars Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, and Laurence Fishburne. Co-stars are Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali. The film follows Brody as Royce, "a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they've beenbrought together on an alien planet... as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers – mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members – human "predators" that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators." Translation: there's going to be a lot of killing in this movie. The special presentation of Predators will take place on March 12 at the Alamo Ritz Theater in downtown Austin, at 10:15pm. Doors open at 9:45pm, and the special event is only open to SXSW Badge-holders on a first-come, first-served basis. The screening will take place at Midnight on Saturday, March 13 at the Alamo South Lamar Theater.
