I think it's really very much annoying for the fans that just to sell the story they are declaring a completely different film as an Evil Dead film/remake by adding that book of the dead into the mix. I don't care how 'great' they would make the film but there is nothing Evil Dead about it.

They should seriously consider re-title the film in its pre-production stage.

That should've happened with a lot of remakes they'd get taken more seriously.

Who cares if the story's been "borrowed" look at all the Italian knock offs... great stuff. Guess they are worried about being sued like all the drama with Castellari's The Last Shark.

man i have been talking about this on hdc since 2005 ( remember when everyone thought ash was going to be in freddy vs jason 2... lol)

im not so pissed about sean william scott playing ash as long as ash is at least in it. this movie has tcsm remake written all over it. i hope im wrong though. it still might be a ok movie but i agree that it probably wont be a good evil dead movie. v thanks for the great updates.

'The Evil Dead' Remake Has its Lead and it is Lily Collins.

If you read the headline and asked, "Who the hell is she," don't feel bad. Lily Collins is an actress, and she's been in a few movies that many haven't seen.

She was Sandra Bullock's daughter in The Blind Side, appeared in Priest and Abduction and has the role of Snow White in Mirror Mirror (the one with Julia Roberts). She was in a couple of episodes of the new 90210. Aside from two other movies in various stages of production, that's about it.

Bloody Disgusting broke the news and now the web is abuzz with the casting of the "new Ash." So, before anyone gets their underwear wadded up, calm down and remember a few things.

First, her character's name is Mia, NOT ASH. As stated by several people involved with the production, Ash will not be a character in the film, a rather wise decision as no one could ever replace Bruce Campbell. Mia is a recovering drug addict and the first person to notice the demons lurking around the cabin. She's not playing the action hero that Ash morphed into during the second and third films, but a strung-out junkie who no one believes when she tells her friends of the evil surrounding the cabin. Or she might be the first one possessed, depending on where you read the plot summary. Regardless, this character is not Ash in any way, shape or form, so let that rumor/hype die.

Second, anyone actually remember Campbell's acting in the original Evil Dead ? Let's just say he improved between the first and second films (to put it kindly). Instead of playing it straight, Campbell played to his strength, morphing into a campy, over-the-top, wise-ass hero. (He deserved an Oscar nomination for Bubba Ho-Tep) His skills as an actor grew quite a bit between the first two films and the role of Ash became a second skin for him, which he falls back into with ease (much like Jack Nicholson and his persona).

One final point. When most people talk about the Evil Dead films and Ash, they're often thinking of the second film only, with mere bits and pieces of the first film lodged in their heads. Everyone seems to forget the shabby acting and how Ash was unable to untangle himself from a bookcase. Hell, Ash didn't start killing Deadites until the final act of the film. Scotty scored the first kill, pushing Ash out of the way and whacking up Shelly with an axe. It wasn't until the second film that Ash became the Deadite exterminator and character we all love.

Speaking of which, it would be interesting to see if the new film ends like the old one, giving us the chance to see a different take on the hero of the Evil Dead films. Yeah, no one will replace Campbell in the film, but who wouldn't want to see some hot gal, victimized throughout the first movie, take on the Deadites in the second.

(Hey, the hot version of Ash is in the works, at least in comic book form!)

So give Collins a chance, folks. She's doing something right if she snagged a role opposite Julia Roberts. And it's obvious the remake isn't trying to imitate the original films. So complain all you want about reboots and remakes, but let's see what Collins can bring to the role.

Bad news for those of you hoping to see a Phil Collins cameo as a big, bald Deadite in the upcoming Evil Dead reboot, as his daughter Lily has dropped out of the film’s leading role.

Collins had signed on to play recovering drug-addict Mia, whose attempts to wean herself off the narcotics are set to be complicated by the soul-sucking nasties released by the Necronomicon.

However, scheduling clashes with other projects have meant Collins has been forced to step down from the role.

Variety’s Jeff Sneider broke the news with the following Tweet: “Again, in case you missed it, LILY COLLINS is OUT of THE EVIL DEAD reboot due to a scheduling issue. Agents, start your engines…”

The new film, directed by Fede Alvarez from a script worked on (in part) by Diablo Cody will maintain the basic set-up of the original (kids go to a creepy woodland cabin) whilst also taking it in some new directions.

The official synopsis explains the differences as follows: “Mia and David, estranged siblings who have recently lost their mother (Mia’s taking it the hardest being that she’s the one who spent most days at the hospital watching her mother deteriorate) have reunited, along with some old friends and his David’s fiancee, for an intervention at THAT old cabin. It’s here that the near rehabilitated Mia will also toss the last of her drugs down the well and finally go cold turkey.”

The Evil Dead is set for a US release date of 13 April 2013, so plenty of time for a replacement to be found for Collins. As long as there’s room for a Bruce Campbell cameo, we’ll be happy.

Evil Dead recently gained a replacement for Lily Collins in the form of Jane Levy, and the star of US show Shameless has wasted little time before waxing lyrical about her love for the franchise.

“I'm so excited," she said. "I'm a big fan of the original. To me it's the scariest movie, ever. But this one is really different. They've changed it a lot, but it's still a pretty gory movie. My mom probably can't see it!”

“As for the tone,” she continues, “I think the humour in the first one came from the special effects of the time. I don't know that they meant it to be funny...this one is not funny. It's definitely dark.”

Meanwhile, Bruce Campbell has also had a bit to say, albeit briefly, confirming that the malevolent trees of the original will be making a reappearance, and that, “they’re not terribly well-behaved this time either.”

Girls, you have been warned… stay away from the shrubbery!

Evil Dead will begin shooting in New Zealand later in the year, and will open in the US on 12 April 2013.

A UK release date has yet to be confirmed.

The ‘Evil Dead’ Remake Is At Least An R, “So Bloody It Will Make Your Head Spin”

Quote:
Director Fede Alvarez recently wrapped up photography on Evil Dead, FilmDistrict and Ghost House Pictures’ remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-hit horror classic, that was shot in Auckland, New Zealand.

Raimi told Collider, “It’s really bloody. It’s so bloody, it will make your head spin. I’ve seen almost all the dailies and they’re really going for it. It’s gonna be grisly and intense and non-stop.”

Does that mean it will have to be R-rated then? “Definitely R. Maybe worse.
The film was written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues (with a polish by Diablo Cody) is produced by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man); Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night) and Bruce Campbell who played the popular Ash character in the original trilogy.

The film is due in theaters on April 12th, 2013.

'The Evil Dead' remake at New York Comic-Con: A gory new trailer, and the wisdom of Bruce Campbell

Quote:
Footage Screened: An extended and extremely gory trailer for the remake debuted in front of a crowd. The beats of the film are familiar: A group of young people go into a remote cabin. But the trailer quickly descends into extremely visceral violence. Some of it looks familiar, including the saw-assisted removal of a demonic hand and a frisky tree. Some of it is all new: The trailer ended with one of the female characters cutting into her own mouth with what appeared to be a box cutter. Aesthetic-wise, it looks like they’re going for something in the neighborhood of “an orgy of bloodshed.”

Snap Judgment: The sheer extremity of the violence in the footage screened earned roars of approval from the crowd. Still, speaking as a lifelong Evil Dead fan, it was a bit disappointing to see that the film is mostly ignoring the goofy slapstick which made the later entries in the series so memorable. This Evil Dead looks like an undeniably freaky horror film — it’s just not clear how much of an Evil Dead film it is.

The film is set to hit theaters on April 13, 2013.
