The Exorcism of Emily Rose
Law & Order meets the Exorcist, almost literally. I try to avoid listening to a bunch of peoples thoughts anymore on movies before I see them. Of course, unless your reading reviews, 95% of peoples thoughts are either "It sucked" or "It ruled" Yeah, thanks for the review, pal. Anyways, I'd heard mostly negative opinions on this movie. Everyone said it was boring with too much build up & dialogue. That alone made me want to see it. I really liked the approach they took. They turned what could have been another demonic good vs. evil tale into a modern day struggle of belief vs. science. There is element of the movie that I thought seriously brought it down (see spoiler section after the rating). Although it didn't ruin the movie, I think taking it out would have made the difference between a cult classic and a movie which will be forgotten within the next 5 years. 6/10 *MASSIVE SPOILERS* The whole cloaked figure/3a.m. schtick almost ruined this movie for me. It took what was a powerful psychological drama/thriller about questioning old beliefs in a modern day and tumbled it down two to three notches. I'm a man who likes to think about things like that, and by throwing that in your face, I felt that the director has decided for you if the story was real or not. Otherwise, this movie would have recieved at least 7.5/10

last movie : Da Vinci Code
fought sleep for the duration of this lacklustre film. totally devoid of emotion or energy. the only person who gave what you would call a performance is Sir Ian MCKellen who was the only one who looked like he was into making the movie. the rest were flatter than a 3 day old open bottle of ginger ale. other people must have found the plot more interesting than i as well ... i couldnt get my head around some old man, gutshot, making up puzzles and shlogging around the louvre writing notes. i know he's a man with a mission but come on ! still - plausibility wasnt the real issue with this one .. it was just the flaccid performances and flatlining pace. on a couple of attempts i was embarrased at the attempt to provide emotion and climax by music alone. this folks, is a non-movie... |

Suspiria
Ever since I bought it for $2 on VHS, this has been one of my favourite horror movies. It was the first Italian horror Ive seen, and unfortunatly is still the only Argento film Ive had the pleasure of viewing. If the rest of his film are as brilliant as this however, I'm really missing out! A little tidbit that Ive always found interesting about this film is that it was originally written to star children. The producers wouldnt allow this, so Argento cast adults, but did not re-write the script. This really enhances the surreal feel of the film, as many of the lines seemed very out of place coming from women in their 20's. The real strength of the film lies in other ares however. First, the lighting and use of colour. As mentioned, Argento gives the whole film an eerie, dreamlike quality through various devices, but the most obvious and effective is the lighting. Always unnatural and unsettling, it creates a wonderful atmosohere. Add to this the amazing Goblin score and the wonderfully orchestrated deaths, and you have a movie sure to creep out most anyone. Highly reccomended. 9/10

i'm one of the few who didnt like it ... i prefer his giallo to his pure horror (even if susperia had giallo 'sensibilities' i thought the music was a 9 the performances were a 4 (i never liked jessica harper) the plot was a 3 (witches ? WTF) the cinematography was a 9 so its a pretty film with a hollow centre (for me) i'm suprised you havent seen Deep Red (Profundo Russo) which is public domain and on a lot of those horror compilations you like. (personally i suggest getting it on Anchor Bay and avoiding the cheap releases - it's worth it) |
