Even if you can find exactly what you're looking for in the public domain ("free" music), the tricky part is licensing since the music didn't play itself on any of the recordings. Best bet is recruiting someone at a local music school, go to unsigned bands or performers that might do it for you (for some publicity) or re-mix some MIDIs with sound samples. If all else fails, hit me up on PM. I'm a horror film composer most of the time.

If you have a Mac, their music scoring software called Soundtrack has a bunch of effects and loops that can be used in a thriller or horror movie. Another thing you can do is to "loop" some effects taken from someone else's score and modify it to match your needs. The software has a little utility that helps you turn any sound input into a loop.

Why don't you just make your own score? Pay a few musicians, don't rip-off of other horror movies scores.

Or you could go it Texas Chainsaw Massacre style and use NO score, provided you have possibly some chickens, a gas-powered electricity generator, and maybe a pig or two in the movie. I suppose it would have to be scary on its own.
Halloween was totally UN scary, in fact it was downright ridiculous, until they added the score.

If your flick is scary on its own, (which it should be, if its supposed to be remotely good) maybe just add a few ominous synth bits to it for the score, and that should do you just fine I'd say.
