Hatchet 2 Sharpens the Blade Once Again

Tonight (October 1, 2010), moviegoers in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Tampa and Orlando will be treated to appearances by director Adam Green and the cast of HATCHET 2 - including horror icons Danielle Harris (Halloween), Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th), Tony Todd (Candyman), R.A. Mihailoff (Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Fans will get a chance to get a meet and greet the cast and participate in a Q&A following the film.

I saw the original Hatchet (2006) when it came out on DVD and enjoyed it, but I must say the whole Hatchet experience is much different (read: more fun!) with an enthusiastic audience. I saw the sequel at Hollywood's historic Egyptian Theater for the special screening, where Green introduced the film and then did a Q&A afterward. Several of the stars were in attendance, and they all had massive cheering sections — but Green really is the star of the show, so obviously devoted to his fans (and horror fans in general). He talked a little bit about how much trouble he had with the MPAA on the first film, and how it came to be that Hatchet 2 is going out Unrated. ("Support Unrated Horror!" was the prevailing battle cry of the night.)
He also spoke of his enduring interest in the character of villain Victor Crowley (whose name, by the way, is pronounced as in the Ozzy Osbourne song, not the way the famous Satanist Aliester Crowley's is) and I was surprised to learn Green's twisted imagination started running wild at such a young age! "I invented Victor Crowley when I was only eight years old, so twenty or so years later when I got the chance to shoot it, I merely made the type of movie I wanted to see on the big screen again," he said.
The sequel begins at the exact moment where Hatchet one left off (yep, that hungover Mardi Gras partier — Green himself — is still horking up chunky-style on the sidewalk!), showing lone survivor of the previous night's mayhem, Marybeth (Danielle Harris in the role originated by Tamara Feldman), as she struggles to come to terms.
Her solution is to join forces with her Uncle Bob (played by Tom Holland, who's better-known as the director of old school horror flicks like Child's Play and Fright Night), local French Quarter voodoo dude The Reverend Zombie (Todd Todd), and a band of ragtag vigilantes (standouts include AJ Bowen and Colton Dunn) — and go after the monster who murdered her family. The story unfolds on the bloody bayou, with more gore than ever before.
"While Hatchet II has less laughs, the gore continues to push the boundaries and it's even more in-your-face and over-the-top than in the first film. The first Hatchet film gradually gets darker and darker as it goes along so that, by the end of it, it’s not quite as funny anymore,” says Green. “This one picks up where the last one left off and will continue in that dark direction. Obviously, the tone of the Hatchet world is all about good old-fashioned slasher fun, and the sense of humor was one of the things that endeared this huge fan base to it, so there are still some laughs. But, overall, things are a lot more intense across the board."

Horror folks in the know will also enjoy the little insider references to Green's most-recent film, Frozen, as well as cameos from indie horror directors Lloyd Kaufman, Marcus Dunstan, Mike Mendez, and Ryan Schifrin to name a few.
