Emily (Leisha Hailey) and Nate (Gale Harold) are a dream couple — she's a dressmaker, and he's an artist. They both make money, reside in a beautiful big home, and are happily expecting their first child. Ain't life grand? If it is, then the dark side to that equation is that death ain't grand — not at all. As their happiness grows, so too does the resentment of Nate's nasty ancestors.

The horror begins early on in this standard yet reasonably entertaining ghost story centered in and around an old family homestead. It's Emily's totally unexpected miscarriage (quite a bloody one) that's the catalyst taking the twosome from the city to the country life his family once enjoyed. Emily and Nate enjoy it, too… for a little while.

The idyll life is soon disrupted by the conception of a new baby and the riling up of restless, relentless spirits. Emily sees nineteenth century dead people, while Nate channels George Lutz.

Pacing is humdrum at times, but overall Fertile Ground is well-acted, nicely shot, and competently made. Tis true: There are much better haunting horror movies you could watch, but if you happen upon it, Fertile Ground is a decent enough timewaster.
