The Official War Movie Thread

Well? What are your favorites and why? Do you have a fascination with a certain war? I think it's high time for a discussion!

I'm personally fond of Vietnam flicks, most especially Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, and Apocalypse Now. The war was a horribly terrifying one, and it's interesting to see the effects it had on innocent people who, in most cases, didn;t even know what they were fighting for.

My favorites(in no order):

Apocalypse Now
Tigerland
Full Metal Jacket
Uncommon Valor(if that counts)
Casualties of War
The Big Red One
Platoon
The Dirty Dozen
Saving Private Ryan

And I am sure I forgot a few.

Patton is a good WWII flick with an exceptional performance by the George C. Scott. Have you seen it?

Totally agree with those choices. I'd add in The Deer Hunter and Hamburger Hill. As far as WWII, I'd have to go with The Dirty Dozen and Patton. And I've got to include The Outlaw Josey Wales (American Civil War). Hell, I even enjoyed Sergeant York (WWI).

I'm a fan of WW2 history and Civil War History. So, a few classics that come to mind are:

Glory (great, GREAT film!)
Gettysburg (pretty damn good too)
Gone With the Wind (don't rag on me for this one!)
North and South (mini-series)

Patton (George C. Scott is amazing)
Saving Private Ryan (maybe the most disturbing war movie)
Stalag 17 (an older classic)
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Dirty Dozen

Just a few great ones that come to mind on those two wars.
