The House that Dripped Blood (1971)

This British short horror tale collection is satisfactory, but not great. If you like Hammer films, Christopher Lee, or Peter Cushing, this film is for you. It is high on atmoshphere and mood (and the music is great) but the writing is just OK. Surprising too because the writer also wrote Psycho. The Wax Museum tale with Peter Cushing is my favorite, but the ending is dopey. The worst tale was the final one with the vampire cloak. It was very corny, the fake bat looked terribly phoney, and the large-breasted vampire actually flinches when they lift her up on the "flying wires".

But it has Ingrid Pitt in it, which excuses a lot.

I do have a soft spot for the Amicus anthology horror films. Favourites are Asylum, The Vault of Horror, and Dr Terror's House of Horrors.

Generally speaking, there is a real "fun" feel to these films, with an undercurrent of uneasy darkness that always makes me feel uncomfortable without the "gross-out" that more modern films often use to get that effect.

This is my favorite of the Amicus anthology pictures. I had a lot of fun with this one! It's scary and it gives you a good giggle every now and then.

I agree, the one that always sticks in my mind is Dr Terror's House of Horrors, probably because of dear old Roy Castle and his trumpet!
