Are we talking about movies that started off cool, and ended SHIT, or movie franchises?
I'll try to mention a few of both.

What comes immediately to mind is the NOES series - The first one, to this day is one of my fvourite horror films. It was a very cool movie, disturbing ideas...and on occasion, yes, I have thought that it would've made a greater impact if there were no sequels to follow it.
However, That's not to say that the entire series was shithouse...it was more inconsistant if anything. The second one was dark and scary, and I thought showed an interesting concept in regarss to the whole possesion thing, had some good kills and nice gore throughout.
The third wasn't as dark, but I think it was pretty damn solid, and is my favourite aside from the first. Good characters, the death of one heroine, the "birth" of another...
#4 was ok, but at this point, the standup comedian routine Freddy had started in the third one began to piss me off...I mean, he didn't HAVE to have a one liner every 5 seconds. I found Freddy MUCH more menacing when he was of few words in the first and second. The movie was alright overall, no complaints.
The dream child, NOES 5...I didnt like it much at all. The feel of the first one continued to dissapear, more comedy, less darkness, and some of the kills were just fucking stupid...
Now, I actually really liked Freddys Dead. Namely because it was DIFFERENT from the last few before it. Kruegers history was delved into, better explanations given, I thought the cast as better than that of the few films preceeding it, and the whole family connection thing was pretty cool too. Not to mention, the atmosphere of the first few films was ALMOST back. Good ending too, in fact, I thought it was a pretty good close to the story.

New Nightmare...I thought it was interesting, but they could have done it much better. Freddy was a little more like his old sinister self in this one, which was good. Some interesting kills, and overall, an alright storyline too. It did, however, drag on a little, and I thought the ending was rather anticlimatic...but overall, a nice effort to explore the frnchise from a different perspective.

F vs J, In all honesty, I enjoyed all the parts that Jason WASN'T involved in. The movie itself, the characters, the Elm street police "conspiracy", the nightmares, the kills...aside from Jason, and the water-thin sub-plot that made them want to fight eachother...(not that I hate Jason or anything)...if you took out all that, I think it'd have made a damn fine Elm street movie, and IMO, elements in this film felt more like the original than ANY of the earlier sequels. I'm not saying Jason spoiled it, just that it definately felt more like an NOES film than AN f13 films, and I think that if more effort was put into it, I'd have preffered another Nightmare.

So...Yeah...I gues after the awesome first installment, it was kinda hard for anything to live up to it...it was here an there, but nothing REALLY compared.

Childs Play - 1&2 were pretty good...I honestly think they should've killed it there. Ill say no more.

I can't remember the name, but the second film by the guys that did super-troopers, the one set on the island...I know it wasn't a sequel or anything, but...I thought it sucked sucked SUCKED, and was nowhere near as funny as super troopers,, the worst part is that I thought it had the potential to be even FUNNIER.

The Mummy - The first was nice, good blend of action, a little comedy, and elements of horror. On first viewing, parts were actually quite scary.
The Mummy Returns, for me, failed on every level...and SO much was rehashed from the first that I just hated it. They turned a decent horror/adventure theme into a "family" kinda movie...They tried to bring new elements into it too, but none of them worked for me...I was REALLY looking foward to it, and I felt fucked over.
The Scorpion King was, I thought, a fairly decent standard action film, nothing special though...I didn't really consider it part of the Mummy series anyway.

Lethal Weapon...The first two were GREAT, I loved them both.
VERY solid action, good character background and contrast, some wicked bad guys, bad-ass fights, and very messed up in parts.
I liked them both equally, the second one was everything a sequel should be.
The third one wasn't too bad, but felt a bit like a TV movie, and to me, the action was very watered down, and the villain was a little cliche, as were his greivances. Not THAT much of a letdown, but the beggining of a downhill slope.
#4 completely killed it for me. Compare the first to the fourth and you see how bad it really was. I mean, Chris Rock? What the FUCK were they thinking there...the film already had one annoying motherfucker, let alone throwing this guy into the mix...not only did it totally change the feel of the film, but it'd be nice if they HAD to turn it into a comedy movie, that if at least SOME of the jokes he spat out weren't just racism in disguise...I find Rock both irritating and offensive at the same time. The storyline was PISS weak, and even Jet Li didn't really improve the overall action ratio of the film. Yep, #3 may have pushed it, #4 made it suck. Too much comedy, too many stereotypes, and frankly, it felt just like sub-standard "dumb" action film.

Scooby Doo...The sequel sucked. Sure, Sure, not that the first one was groundbreaking in any way...but it was a nice effort, and I thought it was quite funny, not to mention it did away with one of my most HATED characters, that only ever spoiled the show.
All the innuendo of the first one was killed in the second, the only way it stood out at ALL was in terms of the special effects.

Ghostbusters.
First one is one of my favourite movies of all time. I have only ever seen the second film ONCE, I don't remember much other than being hugely dissapointed by it.

Back to the Future.
None of them were BAD, but I think they were on a steady decline from the first one.

That reminds me - Teen wolf 2 fucking sucked.

Almost forgot, TMNT#3.
The first 2 pulled it off pretty well I thought...despite the second one being a little sillier and not as dark as the first, I still enjoyed it. The third wa absolute garbage from the shitty (over-used)storyline, to the RIDICULOUS new bright rubber looking suits, to the aweful series that spawned from it....all bad.

Now, films that started good, and got shitty...I can only think of two right now.

1: Long Time Dead.
It started cool and scary...then just faded. The end got slightly interesting, but overall, I felt it drag, and didn't much like it at all.

2: Jeepers Creepers
I liked this movie a LOT. It was the first horror in quite a while (alongside final destination) at the time to actually feel like a real horror movie, not just YET ANOTHER teen slasher. It was gruesome, had a cooool opening scene, and it was SCARY. Very nice kills (The cop car and cat lady scenes - both awesome, not to mention the repeated running over of the creeper, man, that made me laugh), the whole movie had a very panicked feel about it...I enjoyed that, very suspenseful. Slowed down, then it just ended. That's what pissed me off, I seriously wondered if theyd run out of budget or something...
Then there was the sequel...yes, I know it had some funny kills...etc, and showed some as yet unseen talents of the Creeper, however, compared to the first movie...well...it just didn't work. I didn't find it ANY kind of scary. No suspense, shitty characters that were there merely for stereotypical laughs and numerous deaths. I feel the second film bought down my hopes for a good continuation the first...I actually hope they DO revive this series, and make something good of it, because it had, and still HAS much potential.

That's all that comes to mind...I KNOW there's plenty more.

Oh, and I DON'T believe that a bad sequel can "cheapen" the first film, at least I don't let it hppen for me. I get dissapointed, but that's about all.
I DO think that certain films would've made a greater impact without sequels (even some of those that had GOOD sequels), but that's just the way it is - after all, FIRE would be more impressive today, if not for the inventions that followed it...

- B.

Yep, I was...they ought to have renamed the THIRD one just that.
The 1st two, sure..they were great..but shit, I've seen TMNT action figures that looked more convincing than the suits in the third one...and that APPALLING series? Anyone ever have the misfortune? The live action tv series? Sucked fucking armadillo ballsacks. Made the freakin' power rangers look like the shit.

House of a 1000 Corpse! I thought it was pretty good up until the "cave" scene and I thought the end was kinda stupid too!
