There has been a lot of good ideas here and I agree, it's a tough call. One thing I would like to suggest, and I have seen it happen, is if someone is about to get banned, give them a warning. They may really not know what they did or said was over the line. And if it's a group of people having some fun and a mod having a bad day or taking what is being said in the wrong way, then we can explain and/or defend our actions.

Common sense goes along way too. But we all make mistakes. And we all have different senses of humor, I know mine is rather twisted, sarcastic and lewd, but I'm basically a very harmless person and rarely mean anything mean in the things I say and do. I usually try to remember to put a j/k or a smiley, but not always. And people take me the wrong way sometimes. I don't want to get banned for it or walk on eggshells while I'm posting here to make sure I don't offend anyone. I'm not easlily offended, so yah, maybe people just need to lighten up too.

Just my 2 cents (and yes Zero, you can have mine too). :p

An agreement between the mods n admin needs to be agreed upon as to what really
is warranted as a bannable offence ...
especially when it comes to abusing other members.
See ..the thing is...when active members/who have become freinds ..get the shits with eachother and start cussing each other out...will they get banned too ??considering that once they have aired thier differences..they are back to being typical forum buddies again.
There needs to be a specific ruling on this.
What i find amusing ..is that ..the real culprits are able to come back in under different nicks..in order for that to stop..they need thier i.ps banned too ...not just the name.
But..at the end of the day..it is entirely up to the ppl with the power to push that one command button.

If I honestly felt insulted... well I'm a bad example because on the internet I don't think I would be. Ok, so if member A really feels insulted or attacked then they should tell a mod and the mod can look at what was said and if it is indeed offensive then the mod can warn the insulting party once. Anymore insults on member A by the insulting member would be immediate ban... plus we'll know who the little baby tattle tails are. ;)

Of course that wouldn't work, but is there really one policy that would? I don't think so. Too much board politics, let's just watch some people get sliced up, diced up, and eviscerated.

Maybe it's my old age but I laugh like hell when someone gets their panties in a twist arguing on a internet forum. Ever notice newb, hammerfan, urge, myself and others born in the 50's or earlier never get caught up in this stuff? Maybe we're so old we can't stay awake long enough to join in the fun

I'm sure age has a bit to do with it.Hell I got four kids of my own....the last thing I wanna do is get caught up in MORE drama.

Babe...We do not have "that one command button"...Only the administrator (Horror, himself) has the option to IP ban someone...And, he is never here at the forum...

It might be a little easier...If it were possible

If you're gonna start banning IP's, then you definately need to send a warning first. Couples that use the same computer (meaning the same IP) should not get banned as a whole if one of them fucks up. Or if someone is having a shitty day and posts stuff they could have said a bit more gently, basically I'm saying work with people and they're usually willing to work with you. If not, ban their damn asses.

It's been my experience that most mods are "damned if they do and damned if they don't." Any decision made is open to interpretation and usually results in at least one member complaining that said mod is "playing favorites" or being "biased." That being said, I think the mods on this forum do a commendable job.

I'm still a newbie and haven't experienced any of the "hate" that some in this thread are talking about, but I do have a short fuse and a vicious temper (at times) and know what it's like to get baited into an argument. I was banned from a (you'll love this one:)) religious forum because I was very unChristian-like to another member. Now IMO the other person deserved it, and I didn't say anything that was all that bad. I wasn't given any warnings and, because it was an IP ban, can't get back on the site two years later. But you know what, I DON'T CARE!!!! I said what I had to say, got it off my chest, and moved on. And, truth be told, I don't want to be a part of a forum that's like that.

The important thing to remember is that you don't need an ignore button in order to ignore posts. There are certain members' posts that I skim over because I usually don't have any use for what they post. That takes care of the problem (not that there really is one) for me. And if someone does the same to me...more power to 'em.

I have, however, been wondering about a couple of things.

1) If Phalanx (I'm assuming he used to be Cheeba) came back with new name and profile, how did anyone know it was him? Why not simply ignore the hateful posts? It's been my experience that if nothing rises to the bait, the fishermen go away.

2) Can a mod simply delete a thread? On another forum I belong to the mods are "strict" (that's a nice way of saying it), and I can always tell when a thread is going to be deleted because the posts become personal attacks with lots of profanity, namecalling, etc. I must admit that when I read the "Cheeba, Cheeba" thread, I kept waiting for it to be deleted because there were some pretty "unkind" things being written. Of course I was applying the other forum's rules.

Just to be safe I think everyone should remember the golden rule, and I didn't learn it from the religious website that kicked me off. Opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one and no one thinks theirs stinks. :D

Thanks for contributing

We try not to delete too many things here...We really are NOT very strict...The more we 'remove', the more censorship is exersized...Horror (our administrator) is HUGE on 'freedom of speech' and a firm supporter of second chances (and third...and fourth...to infinity), which is why we cannot IP ban...

No one needs to hide who they are when they get banned and rejoin...Everyone gets a 'fresh start' at that point...And a brand new chance to fuck up again :)
