I read about half of the book and had to put it down, it was so dull! I have no desire to see the movie, it didn't do very well anyway. It also doesn't give a very satisfactory explanation of why he's a cannibal (or at least I didn't get that far).

You made it further than I did, I think.....:( Good to know I wasn't the only one.

The movie was alright. I wouldnt watch it again. It doesnt feel like a thriller or a horror movie. There isnt any suspense or scary scenes at all. Very predictable. I would consider it more of a action film. Disappointed.

Unless he's molested and thoroughly represses deep seated sexual urges, I don't think it's a very good reason anyway. Or if he's forced to dine on human flesh to stay alive and digs it that much. The sad part of origin stories for a serial killer meant to exist in a real world milieu is that it has to be like the origin of a REAL WORLD serial killer. Most of these are just unpleasant child abuse incidents and frustrated early sexual encounters. What would be more interesting is showing him struggle with maintaining his intellectual pursuits and early professional life while dealing with the urge to be a cannibal.

You are so right, and that is why I have chosen not even to watch this movie.
No Anthony = No Hannibal!

My lips are sealed for fear of a big SPOILER for those wishing to read the book or watch the movie.

It's a vital twist to Hannibal's apparent vengeful attitude!

Again, I accepted that Hopkin's didnt star in the movie because it is about his childhood and teenagerdom years. As I said, Hopkin's would have had to travel back in time to take 30/40 years off his life!

It is about his youth and I, personally, liked the actor(s) picked to play him.

I also quite liked the film - it was atmospheric and the end twist does fit in with his vengeful psychopathic state of mind!

I'm still angry with them changing the ending to "Hannibal" the 2nd movie (plus Jodie was replaced by Julianne!) - I'd have rather had the psychologically horrific ending from the book.
