Son of a...!

Well, life's hectic right now so whatever spare time I get during the weekends I spend watching movies on DVD with the wife. Earlier last week, we had a viewing session which included all Terminator movies back-to-back, and just about 25 minutes into T3, the movie started freezing up.

Now, I thought it was an annoying speck of dust which was doing this, so I took it out, puffed on its surface once, and put the DVD back in. Same freezing as before. Took it out yet again, and turned on the lights (we usually watch our movies with lights dimmed in our bedroom), and checked it very carefully.

And what do I see? A long, very-thin crack which started from the central loop's edge, and stretched right into the middle of the DVD in a thin, straight line! :mad:

Naturally, I felt very angry at damaging my copy. Maybe I pulled it out a bit harder or something - I dunno how you all take your DVDs out of their cases, but I usually press the central spindle of the case gently and firmly, and it gives way, easing the DVD out - or maybe I pushed the disk back in more firmly than I should have, the last time I took it out for a watch.

That made me have a real alarming thought. I went through the rest of my DVDs and sure enough, 3 other disks have long, thin cracks stretching from the center to about one-third into the disk.

This is getting worrying, and annoying.

I notice that more with titles I rent. My DVDs are all mint apart from a few I've brought 2nd hand that have some surface scracthes none of them fuck up when I play them tho.

DVDs are pretty fragile

Amen to that. I wonder if there's some other way to keep my disks more protected.

I have noticed that different cases have different spindles at the centre to hold the disks. Some are easier and smoother, and some are slightly tougher and hard. The harder ones are the trouble-makers.

Oh well, maybe I ll shift those ones into other cases when I get some time.

Copies are easy to get.

That's not the problem though. I am wondering which sort of DVD cases I should get to keep the disks more secure, and free from cracks. I am close to 2500 DVDs in my collection, and cracks is a worrying problem.

hummm....that's annoying & frustrating.

My Battle Royale dvd case is so tough & hard that I wonder one day I may loss my temper & just simply crack it down!:mad: I really need to change it with a smoother one. As it's one of my few original dvds so the case is still very fresh and looks nice outside...so I still keeping it.

In the dvd case of In The Mouth of Madness there is a card listing the scene index. There is also a caution mentioning at the bottom of the card about how to take the dvd out from the box or whatever....believe me...first time when I opened the pack it made me quite nervous and I was thinking to call some 'experts' for it!:D

Anyways, this is a very common scenario here....with our local or Malaysian reprints. So we need to every time check the dvd first before buying it, even we can change it later also if we face any other problems with the disc after the purchase. But as it kills much time & patience so it's totally frustrating. I bought the Ichi The Killer dvd twice from 2 different shops and I figured out that the whole lot has been cracked!

considering all the movies I have - and the number of used copies i've bought (esp ex-rentals) - I've been really lucky.

only 1 movie i know of that wont play (dies half way through on any player) - and that's my copy of Dune - extended version.
