I saw this in the cinema when i was a kid:
 There have been some good dogs in horror films too: Beauty and the Beast in The Hills have Eyes The dogs in Humongous and a guard Dog kills Wilbur Whateley in The DUnwich Horror (though this scene didn't make it to either film). and the saddest movie ever made:

The Plague Dogs looks like the sort of movie that would traumatize children for life. I watched Watership Down when I was a child and still get seriously freaked out at the mere mention of the story.
