Corporal jumps to his death from hotel

United Kingdom - The killer of Sally Geeson plunged 150ft to his death after turning himself into a human fireball, it emerged last night.

Lance Corporal David Atkinson, 31, jumped from a seventh-floor hotel window in flames hours after the student's naked body was found.

There were straps on his body and a cord about his neck. He was still alive when rescue services arrived at the scene 360 miles from where Sally vanished. But he died shortly afterwards.

The Royal Engineers NCO was prime suspect for murder after mobile phone checks effectively proved he was in a car with the 22-year-old student the night she disappeared.

A police source said yesterday: 'We have no doubt this was the man who killed her.'

Atkinson, whose attitude towards women worried army bosses, asphyxiated Sally after luring her into his car as she tried to find a lift home in Cambridge early on New Year's Day.

After dumping her body three miles away he drove to Glasgow where he booked into the city centre Corus Hotel.

Early on Saturday, after learning Sally's corpse was found, he set fire to himself and leapt to his death.

A horrified woman who saw his blazing body said: 'It was a nightmare vision that I'll never forget.'

Police are now awaiting the results of forensic tests from Glasgow and Cambridge.
