Saw V, VI, VII and possibly VIII!

...and you thought the making of Saw IV was exasperating...

March 3, 2008 - IGN TV recently spoke to Scott Patterson (The CW's Aliens in America), who had a notable role in last fall's Saw IV as Strahm, the FBI agent who found himself trapped in a bad situation as the film ended. Patterson will be reprising that role in Saw V and revealed that he hadn't seen a script yet, but that production begins very soon – on March 17th -- noting that the producers are always "very secretive."

Patterson said that when it comes to getting hints on what's next in the extremely interconnected series, the actors are given some information but, "They don't give you much. And we're not really permitted to talk about it. The level of secrecy…I signed all these forms. They could take away my house if I mentioned a storyline."

Patterson is actually signed for the series through Saw VI, though he stressed, "Well, they can kill off any character at any time – as you've seen. I'll be doing V and I'm signed for VI – but that doesn't mean I'll actually be in it or do it. It's their option."

The actor told us about the difficulties of working on the films, saying, "There's a lot of choices that can't be made because it doesn't fit into scene six of the first Saw movie. A scene in one film informs the next and so on in every direction possible. And also there's things that the director knows that will be happening in V and VI that will dictate notes that he gives you on a scene. So he can't tell you much, but all he can say is, 'You really can't make that choice because it won't fly in VI…and then they'll have to rewrite VI….' It does get a little confusing at times. But as long as you don't knock over the furniture and slip on the blood, you're OK."

Meanwhile, IGN has confirmed that Saw IV cast members Tobin Bell, Scott Patterson, and Costas Mandylor will return for the Lionsgate franchise's fifth installment, which will be directed by the series' former production designer David Hackl.

Bell plays the franchise's central character Jigsaw, while Patterson and Mandylor play FBI Agent Strahm and police detective Hoffman, respectively. Patterson made his franchise debut in Saw IV, while Mandylor joined in Saw III.

Saw V begins filming March 17, and is slated for a October 24, 2008 release.

I don't really mind them continuing the series. At least with Saw the movies are all interconnected. It's an ongoing, evolving storyline. Take something like Friday the 13th and the sequals are really just excuses to kill more people. The storyline doesn't evolve anywhere at all. "OK, we're doing a new Friday the 13th movie. No, I have never seen any of the others, but I'm going to write and direct this one anyways. Now the only question that matters: where are we going to have Jason killing completely random people this time?" Bleh.

I fully realize that Saw is a pretty popular franchise to rag on, but at least they're doing more than just throwing blood, tits, and ass on the screen yet again and laughing the whole time while they rake in the cash from people watchign the same movie yet again, just in a slightly different setting.

The ending of IV made perfect sense and if V and VI are as good as IV I'll watch them. If V sucks I will skip VI. Damn, I wonder why people have this inherited desire to hate any sequel past 3 (or for some 2), just watch the movies and if you think they're bad skip the next ones. Like you Freak, I see a legitimate reason for you not to want to see V and VI but people who liked Saw II didn't want a third, and some who liked III didn't want to see IV. At least they're not remakes and it's nice to see a company actually working with the IP they have to tell a complete story. Now if IV was "Jigsaw Takes Manhattan" I'd be worried.

I heard they're stopping at VII.

That would be cool... Seven solid films, all connected.
