Kim Coates Resident Evil 11-13-2009 Transcript

Coates: Welcome, welcome to the set everybody. How are you? I look good, right?

So tell us what you play in this?

Coates: Ah, you know, this isn’t the interview now? This is a, “Hi.” We’ll get into that. So where’d everybody come from? Everywhere? Toronto. I love France. I went there with my family for Christmas last year. My oldest daughter’s about to study in Paris this coming January. She campaigned for Obama and she worked for the Mayor of Los Angeles last summer. So she’s like one of those kids that takes after her mother, no me at all. (Laughs) She’s like a brainiac and she really wants to make a difference and work for the U.N. and do the whole deal, so...

Yeah, so what have you guys seen? You just got here now, right?

We’ve been here.

Coates: It’s pretty white. They guarantee me its gonna look amazing though, on the day. But I think we’re in this set for six days, right Cynthia? But Milla’s great, right? And Ali, I mean it’s a great cast. I mean, we really, Milla this is her fourth one, right? And she really, they’ve all gotten better and better in her mind in just the quality of everything. I’m a big fan of the other three. I was up for the second one, but I couldn’t do it. So I’m really glad that I was able to do this one now.

What part were you going for?

Coates: The second one? I think it was the, the Irish actor. Do you know his name? He’s a good actor. I forget his name. He did the second one too. He played one of the lead bad guys or a doctor or whatever it was.

You should look to your right.

Coates: I should look to my right? Oh really, my double? Dino? Oh, they played it back? But yeah, now I’m playing Bennett Sinclair. He’s a producer, he’s a survivor. He’s the local dick-head for sure. But everyone needs a dick-head. When I met with Paul, I really, when I read the script, I thought, “This guy has to be funny.” Not that he’s funny, funny. But he has to come off as funny and he totally agreed. So, for me, I’ve played a lot of bad buys. I’ve played a lot of heavies. But I love comedy more than anything, so it’s been a lot of fun to make Milla pee her pants on every take. And Paul’s letting me just go with the script and I’m having a great, great time. I mean, when I did Black Hawk Down, we filmed literally half a page a day, a quarter page a day. It was just an incredibly intense five months. This show, this show... Nice look. (Laughs) Contacts. It looks like I’m completely blind.

Can you see with those contacts?

Coates: You can’t, yeah, I can’t actually.

And here’s the other scene on the other monitor.

What are your thoughts on 3-D?

Coates: You know, that’s a great question. 3-D, right? It’s the wave of the future. This whole James Cameron thing coming out, Avatar. We’ve done a lot of 3-D in animation obviously, we’ve done a lot of 3-D in some horror stuff. But this is a real step forward. Kids love it. Do you guys like it? Do you guys like 3-D? As long as the story’s good and it’s done well, I think it can be very, very exciting. For me it’s odd always to put glasses on in the theater, but that’s just me. But I’m really excited to see what it’s going to look like because Glen’s doing an amazing job lighting this thing. But the cameras, getting back to Black Hawk Down, getting to, for this show, we do so little pages a day. These massive cameras are on cranes and they’re always on cranes or they have to be really still. You can dolly with them, but because of the mirrors it really takes a long time to shoot this puppy. And I’m doing a big series right now in the states and it’s all handheld almost. So it’s all very fast-paced, crazy, great writing. And to come to this, it’s a joy in a different way. It takes forever, but oh my God, it’s so much fun. And to see these cameras move and these huge sets that we had. I was in an airplane last week. We were in an airplane inside the... Are these guys going to be able to see any scenes or we’re not allowed to show them. Right, I get it. Yeah, no, but I’m in an airplane and it’s right inside the studio and what they did is phenomenal. Of course there’s a lot of green screen, obviously. But the production values of this script has been, to me, mind-blowing to watch. I’m as excited as you guys to see how it does and the whole 3-D element because kids love it now. And pirating, right? Pirating is a huge thing now, right? Am I talking too much now? We’ll get to that later. Good-bye. (Laughs)
